Timex Expedition WS4 Watch Review: A Bit Of Wrist Adventure Wrist Time Reviews

As your tastes change, buy a watch within your means to reflect your style and where you are in life.

Itay Noy is a totally Tel Aviv, Israel based watch maker. The brand is named after its founder, Itay Noy, who is the heart of the manufacture. He's won several international design awards, which makes sense given the impressive character and refinement of his designs. With an impressive collection of watches so far for the brand,  I'd like to focus on his Duality line of watches only today. The Duality collection is literally two things in one. Two watches, with two contradictory attitudes. While not the first time a watch has been made with faces on both sides, this is the first time that I've seen an actual theme be applied to the concept. Thus, each watch in the collection is comprised of opposites, with associated symbolism on the watch designs themselves.

“When I look down I see the ocean depths. When I look up I see the expanse of the universe”, he says, referring to the parallel dimension of his art and character. The sea and the sky do in fact come together in “ImmenSEAty”. Its glare-proofed sapphire crystal reveals an expanse of sea as well as various unexpected indications. Along with the centrally positioned hours and minutes on Earth, the watch shows the time on Neptune, Uranus and Saturn on individual subdials arrayed on the upper part of the main dial. For the record, please note that a day on Saturn lasts 10.656 hours, on Uranus 17.24 hours and on Neptune 16.11 hours. ImmenSEAty” comes with a hand-wound mechanical movement that provides five days of power reserve. It features a flying tourbillon, i.e. one with suspended carriage, at 6 o’clock, that includes a Swiss lever escapement and a construction allowing the carriage to rotate in exactly one minute without resorting to ball bearings. The watch’s power reserve is read off a 120° sectoral indicator positioned between 8 and 9 o’clock on the dial."

I don't know when Pontiac watches died, but they did. They were not an American brand, but as brands come and go, Pontiac went the way of the Dodo a long time ago. GM recently announced that Pontiac will shut down. The over 80 year old division of General Motors has had better times of course, but are we really losing much with the elimination of this automobile brand? The last important Pontiac car was probably the late 1960's GTO line, but that was just because it looked cool - since then it has been dog after derivative dog. The only good recent Pontiac cars were just re-branded Australian Holden cars. While still technically GM cars, Holden had no connection to the chronically dysfunctional American design and engineering side of things.

With the introduction of the Bulgari-Bulgari Moonphase to be released at this year's Basel show, Bulgari is definitely widening its appeal. By adding more complications for women, other than just bedazzling timepieces with diamonds, I have even more respect for them as a watchmaker for women.

The best part is that this Life Alert watch  has a very good chance of becoming a generational pass-down piece. You almost always find the watch still attached to the body, as the Life Alert pendant often gets tossed off the corpse when the Life Alert crew comes for the fine China and Silverware... I mean poor victim. Best yet, when the Life Alert people come to your house expecting to find an alone old person in bad shape or dead begging to be robbed, they might just let you keep the timepiece. That my friend, is service.

The Globemaster GMT is made with a particularly interesting modified ETA 2836 movement offering both an independently adjustable GMT hand while retaining a "jump hour" functionality. It's based on ETA's day-date movement with the day becoming the 24-hour hand. It's amazing. I've never seen anything like it. The 3-6-9-style on the face is simple and classic, while retaining a utilitarian, "gadget" feel through the hash-marks and very unique skeletonized GMT hand. The buttery yellow GMT and seconds hands add a minor shock of color. The small, unmagnified date at 4 o'clock also lends to functionality while not cluttering the face. The entire face (indices, main hands) is illuminated, which glowed in some respect for a 4-5 hours after a 5-minute charge in direct light. It is water-resistant to 200 meters, as is the base standard for any dive watch.

Also, Itay Noy watches are alternatively available at Ace Jewelers here.

Functions for the watch are: a rattrapante (split-time) or second timezone, 12 hour chronograph, date, and of course time. The watch case is fantastic looking made of three materials - stainless steel, grade 5 titanium, and 18k rose gold. There are two dial color options available (silver or black). The layout and design of the dial are all meant to inspire a sense of 19th century mechanical gauge futurism, and are based on original Louis Moinet designs. Hands with arrow tips are clear and unpretentious, but tasteful. The case reminds me of a 1970s diver's watch case in all its 46.3mm wide glory. Inside the watch is an automatic mechanical movement exclusive to the models. The strap is crocodile with carbon finishing. Of course a luxury watch like this does not come cheap. Expect prices for this very limited watch to be between ,000 - ,000.

Bulgari-Bulgari Moonphase Watch for Women 2009 Release

The below thoughts are by John Cunningham, a fellow watch lover. I asked him to comment on this TheTimeTV video from the perspective of a more mature watch lover -as was interested in his response to the marketing approach taken by Audemars Piguet in presenting the Royal Oak Offshore Survivor watches. Here are his words:

RSW Moonflower Watch for Women 2009 Watch Releases

Ignore the first 30-60 seconds of this film, it gets really cool after that. I love watching stuff like this because it actually does a very good job at showing you how watches are made at houses like Audemars Piguet. Yes, you need to know what to look for, but pay attention to the tools and techniques used to polish and decorate the movements. This process literally takes up most of the time in watch movement assembly. While the film is supposed to take place in the 19th century (even though some of the stuff looks really modern), the same process is used today to make high-end luxury watch movements. Take the hand-spun machine that spins the movement plate around, today it is just done with machines but that are more often than not still controlled by a human operator. There are no automatic decoration or finishing processes for this level of watch making - just good ol' manual processes to give it that unique human touch.

Temption Cameo Watch Review: Boutique Eccrentric Good Taste Wrist Time Reviews

Omega ups the ante with this new Seamater Aqua Terra GMT Chronograph watch. The timepiece is available in either steel or 18k red gold, and on both versions the hands and hour markers on the dial are in 18k gold. Sounds like Rolex territory to me. Not sure if any previous Seamaster Aqua Terra watches had gold (white) in the dials of even steel watches. The vertical line pattern of the dial is meant to look like the deck of a boat (the "Teak Concept"), which explains part of the ritzy character of the watch. The dial will have highly polished features, and you can tell it is nice and deep to look into. There is of course a metal (steel or gold) bracelet available in addition to the alligator strap. The watch will be a good size at 44mm wide. Things were getting kinda crazy with the 46mm plus sizes that Omega started to dabble with a little while ago.

2009 Hamilton Ventura XXL Automatic Watch Watch Releases

It took me a while to notice, but the contrast between the sans-serif font on the bezel and the (semi) serif font on the chapter ring (with the minute marker around the periphery of the dial) is a very sharp look that is easy to miss. Then of course you have the aquamarine green which exactly the tone of sea worthy green you need on a nautically themed watch (makes for good lume too). The dial will be highly visible through the double anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal.

See Romain Jerome watches on eBay here.

I am not convinced that the size of the dauphine hands is big enough for me. They are the perfect size for the smaller dial that appears on the machine textured dial when you open up the shutter, but when closed - they look stubby, really stubby. I'd have a feeling that they might look more odd if they where larger. On the sometimes hidden dial is a clever second time zone hour hand. Use it with the standard minutes hand for the other timezone. This is to be distinguished from a GMT hand, which shows the time on the 24 hour scale. The main dial is black via a PVD application, with the applied gold numerals that make for a very pretty face.

This was a great watch to write about because it is just a good execution of the jumping hour theme. Does it mean that I am partial to digital watches because I like it? That is basically what a jumping hour watch is, a hybrid between a digital watch and an analog one. Of course it would still be a mechanical digital watch. No quartz movements here. Read about this lovely Perrelet Jumping Hour watch on my AskMen.com article here.

I'd like to focus on the case of the watch, as it is a strong point. Looking at it from the side, you realize that the wide bowl looking case is even smaller than you think. The internal Japanese quartz movement does not take up a lot of space, so the case tapers out to 40mm from a smaller size (20mm or so) where the movement is housed. Including the caseback, the case is made up of three parts, put together in a quality manner. The steel is nicely crafted, and the lightly brushed finish of the case works well with the shinier face and bracelet. The lug design is interesting, and I like the use of exposed screws underneath the watch to secure the bracelet, as this gives it a more quality look in my opinion. One area that I think might be improved is the very sides of the lugs where the strap is exposed inside the lug structure. I would have liked the bracelet to be housed inside the lug connectors totally without being exposed on the sides, but then again, it does allow for a flush integration with the lugs when looked at from above. So not really a problem at all, just an observation for future design ideas. Then you have the signed (with Skagen's logo) crown, which while little, is easy to use.
