Myself being in this group I felt it prudent to mention first. Lawyers comes in all varieties but one thing all lawyers (should) have in common is a distinct attention to detail. We also value items of inherent value, and reliability. Accuracy is another characteristic that lawyers value, and coincidentally enough, these are the same values that many watch makers attempt to imbue their watches with (at least from a marketing standpoint). There is also the showmanship of being an attorney, and regardless of an attorney's area of practice, it is important for them to make a stand. For this reason an attorney needs a high quality timepiece that communicates purpose and strength when seen by observers. Good brands for the successful attorney are Rolex, Roger Dubuis, Piaget, Sinn, Breguet, A. Lange Sohne, Franck Muller and many others.
The second reason for having a reserve is psychological, and has to do with our natural desire to want to compete. An auction starting at ,000 for an item with a ,000 value is far less interesting than one that starts at .00 for the same item. Starting an auction with a low opening bid is an excellent way to get people excited and bidding. Once people start to bid (being attracted by a low opening bid), the idea is that they will start to compete with each other to "win." The mental need to win, combined with the desire for the item they are bidding together creating a very healthy bidding environment. For this reason, the reserve price has a decent purpose and is often used. However, this ideal situation of having a bidding frenzy that seller's get excited about is less common than you might think. The reality is that only the most desirable items are able to enjoy a large bidding war that exceeds the reserve price. Most items placed with a reserve price do not sell.
Two major elements of the Ball Engineer Master II Aviator GMT that separate it from different aviator watches are the inclusion of the micro gas tubes and the large red GMT hand. As you likely know, the gas tubes are filled with a harmless (more or less) radioactive compound that is a light source that will last for about 35 years. This way you don't need to "charge" the luminant. Needless to say that Ball watches all have this feature, and are very well suited to night or low light viewing. The Large red 24 hour hand rides along a dedicate dial making it easy to identify the 24 time. For some reason, I feel as though the watch hands are all a bit short, but this is not likely to be an issue for most people.
The North Pointer is a nice no-nonsense watch. The moniker "professional" is apt, as this is a handsome watch fit for function. A Limited Edition Richard Sachs edition (only 20 pieces at about ,500 each) is also available. Richard Sachs makes hand-built bicycles in Connecticut, and is highly applauded as a master bike maker. With a snug fitting rubber strap and easy to read dial, the RGM North Pointer makes a fitting cycling watch. Let's look a bit at the design of the dial. You'll notice it separated in to three concentric circles. The outermost circle serves to indicate minutes, then the middle ring is for the hours, and finally, the center ring serves to indicate the hours for the 24 hour GMT hand. This visual separation really assists with legibility, as do the large diving watch like hands. The watch also has a the date and an out of the way minimalist seconds hand. Overall the design reminds me a lot of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and Aqualung watches.

Why on Earth is this watch not officially sold in the US? I mean you can still get it online, but people need a watch like this to get them through the day, at least any walking parts. Frankly, I will all but forget how to stroll or pace without this watch. The Seiko Pullsee is technically a fitness watch, but really serves to do something that the Japanese love, give you extraneous information. An upgrade from the mere "Pedessa" model, the Pullsee relies of two basic sensors to tell you everything you need to know. It has a built in pedometer and rate-heart monitor. As an odograph, this watch literally measures walking. The pedometer is an internal sensor, while I believe the heart rate monitor is attached to the strap which would touch your wrist. In addition, it has a calendar, stop watch functions, calendar, and other functions you'd expect in a fitness watch.
Inside is an automatic Sellita SW200 movement which is basically an ETA 2824 (exact copy). The movement in oriented in such a manner than the escapement wheel is visible through an open window on the face. This popular trend has always been nice to look at. Think of it as a poor man's tourbillon window. The M109 has a 41mm x 41mm case that comes in both PVD treated rose gold plated steel and polished steel, with calf leather straps or matching metal bracelets that are designed nicely. It has a sapphire crystal as well.

Most of the time, the person designing the modified watch, and the person doing the work are different. Various watch modifiers exist and each have different specialties and prices. The best combination is having an imaginative mind with knowledge of the available parts, combined with a good watch modder who can do the work.

It is sad that Bell & Ross Geneva watches are so rare. These are highly limited in production, but in a sense that is good. quality and mass production don't often coincide, and it is nice to know that there are those still out there able to make a wonderful watch without succumbing to the potential woes associated with mass production. Again, it goes without saying that the components of this watch are top notch, with retail prices in the ,500 range you are paying for it. The occassional pre-owned model is a great value. You really have to see these watches in person to appreciate them, and the rare example that shows up for sale should be snatched with haste.
The Temption Cameo and Fortis Square are both (approximately) 39mm wide and high - steel - square-cased watches with round dials. Each primarily arrives with dark brown leather straps, and have dark against white colored faces. Each has a shaped rear on the watch case to better fit to your wrist. Each contains a Swiss ETA automatic mechanical movement with a sapphire crystal caseback window (an ETA 2892-2 in the Cameo, and an ETA 2836-2 in the Square, though a chronograph or GMT version of the Square is also available with other movements). Both have a retail price between ,500- ,000. Both are functionality focused with a stylistic edge. In my book that makes these two watches competitors.

This is not a watch I would call beautiful, but the steampunk goggle appearance of the time telling semi-cones is endearing. It is a sympathetic machine, and depending on its orientation, it looks to be smiling or demurely cute with the cones serving as eyes. Add the exposed screws and polished metal, and you have a thematic masterpiece that for once, combines science fiction, steampunk, and anthropomorphism; in a watch.
The rest of the new Franck Muller Tourbillon Lady 3080 T is equally petite. The 18k white gold tonneau shaped case is 42mm high, and 30mm wide. Surprisingly, it is only 10mm thick, which makes it very thin for a tourbillon watch. It is manually wound in-house movement with 80 hours of power reserve in two barrels. Pretty nice for a such a small watch. On the back of the case is another sapphire window for a view of the movement.
You typically see fashion designers from Europe use the Japanese to make their watches (especially the movements). Evisu has turned the tables on this, and is a Japanese designer that is using the Swiss to make their new lines of watches, which look pretty cool from a fashion perspective.
This is a very large watch, with a case width of 49mm (the actual dial is 32mm wide). You'll have to be prepared for a watch that takes up most of your wrist, but you do want to show a watch like this off. If you aren't in love with the black on gray palette on the dial, there are a few other colors available with white, red, and of course the black. Be aware that this is a limited edition watch of only 50 pieces in each tone. Not to worry though, because if you like the Nazca collection there are many other models (a bit different and without the power reserve). Each shares the iconic looking chiseled case. This particular model will run you about 00. Check them out and enjoy.
What is a fashion watch? Well it can mean a couple of things, but in this instance it means a company that mostly makes clothes or other fashion accessories, and then embarks on releasing watches. The nicer the underlying brand, the more expensive the watch. French Hermes not new to this game, but in the last 10 years or so have stepped up their watch offerings. Releasing more mechanical watches along with a more masculine line.

Inside that watch is an in-house automatic mechanical Jaquet Droz caliber 4063D with double barrels that has a 68 power reserve. The movement is viewable through the see-through caseback window, and the rotor is actually done in 22k gold. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters, which is enough, but don't go giving with it. The rubber strap is nicely textured, and the deployment is steel (PVD coated), not ceramic. Best of all, the watch is largely sized at 44mm wide. I think this is a great looking timepiece, but it won't come cheap. Figure about k - retail.
For those of you in the know, Fallout 3 is the newest installation from Bethesda Softworks, and one of the most sophisticated and involving games out there. While no longer just for your computer, the Fallout games are set in an intriguing post apocalyptic universe where legacy technology mixes with nuclear mutants, in a role playing game where survival is based on a mix of innovative game play and tactical cleverness. If you are a gamer, or interested in the post apocalyptic genre, I highly recommend it.
The name really sums it up: "Land Instrument." It is meant for land based operation as opposed to Linde Werdelin's upcoming Sea Instrument. Specifically, the functions are focused on cold weather, high altitude exploration. For example, it features such notices as an "avalanche warning" or "frostbite warning." This might seem gimmicky, but using the external thermometer and internal barometric pressure gauge and altimeter - as well as its logging functions - the Land Instrument can actually give you accurate information that is worth paying attention to (and can save your life in dire situations).
